Whether it’s your high school sweetheart or someone you met on a dating app like UnFiltered, many college aged students are involved in long-distance relationships.  Certainly our culture’s use of technology and social media attributes to this.  Long-distance relationships can take a toll on people, but if they work out in the end, it can be very rewarding. Long-distance relationships in college seem like the opposite of what we define as the typical college experience, but studies show that as much as 75% of college students have been in one at some point.

Between the partying, late night studying, spring breaks, and sporting events, you’re meant to be meeting new people and having a crazy time.  What is often overlooked, however, is the worry and concern that comes with the management of a relationship of great distance.  There’s no need to break up and throw in the towel simply because of the miles between you.  Having a fulfilling long-distance relationship while in college is not impossible, and if your relationship is important to you, then you owe it to yourselves to give it a chance!  Here are a couple of things to consider if you are trying to maintain a healthy long-distance relationship.

Stay positive!

Try not to focus on the negatives of long-distance dating.  Even though you have fewer interactions than relationships with no distance, studies show that interactions between couples in a long-distance relationship are more meaningful.  In short, don’t take the time you have together for granted!  For college students, especially college freshmen, there are many new changes happening in your lives. For many, it will be your first time living on your own and building a new sense of independence, budgeting your money, having to deal with difficult class schedules, and perhaps even having to maintain a work schedule as well (not to mention the philanthropic groups and late night partying). Remember, your partner is going through the exact same challenges. This allows for both of you to connect with each other and be there to support one another in times of uncertainty or stress.  It can be hard to meet your partner’s needs while you’re settling into your new life, but if you remain open and positive with each other, it will be much easier to maintain a healthy relationship.

Communicate

As busy as you will be, try to keep your partner in the loop of what’s going on. There’s a strong possibility that you can assist each other through struggles, as some of these you will share.  Regardless of your degree, many universities share similar curriculum for freshmen especially, so studying together is a great way to be supportive and spend time together.  One of the hardest things about relationships is communication.  Be straight forward with your schedules and be sure to set time aside to talk to them throughout the day and provide updates on how your day has been. There’s a reason why you’ve agreed to date from afar, chances are your partner plays a major part in your support system and distance doesn’t have to alter that.

Communication must also be set with realistic terms.  You decided to attend college to earn a degree and better your future. Yes, your relationship is one of your top priorities, but your education should be your top priority.  And, although technology is great for communication, make sure you aren’t constantly choosing to chat with your significant other rather than building a healthy social life at school. Scheduling times to chat will allow you to be consistent, but also have the freedom to go out and create new friendships.  Have a clear and agreed upon plan and method on how you can and will communicate, determining what works best for the both of you. Having very clear expectations for each other will help tremendously and will assist in avoiding frustration and doubt in your relationship.

Utilize video chat

Technology is your best friend in a long-distance relationship. Having access to video chats through applications like FaceTime, Skype, or UnFiltered’s in-app video calls will surely make the distance seem much easier.  Having that visual connection can help ease any separation anxiety, as it can help to make it feel like you are both in the same room and spend quality time together.  Whether you two just want to jump on a video call to simply talk, help each other study for upcoming exams, or have a virtual date night by watching a TV series or movie in sync, these are both great tools to utilize at the convenience of your fingertips.  Video chat can definitely bring back a sense of normalcy if you started your relationship together and moved apart.

Schedule time to see each other

Even with the use of video chatting, it is still important to continue scheduling time to see your partner. Let’s be honest, most college students are not going to be able to travel and see their partner every weekend. Funds for many are tight and studies begin to take over a few weeks into the semester. However, planning time to visit one another gives you a goal to work towards and something to look forward to.  Have fun with scheduling these times!  The UnFiltered App has a “Date” feature that allows you to schedule a date through the app which syncs to your calendar.  It even syncs to your maps for easy directions and will send you a reminder.  You should take advantage of the time you get on long weekends or holiday breaks to try and plan a visit.  It’ll also make it much easier to manage your time and save the necessary cash, which will make the time you do spend together fun and less stressful!

Trust them

This is probably the most important thing to consider in a long-distance relationship.  Besides, what is a relationship without trust? Building a social life and making new friends is a huge part of the college experience. Of course, it can be tough to think about them creating new experiences without you, but you should be supportive of them making new friends and growing their social circle. Give your partner the benefit of the doubt if they miss a phone call or take a while to respond to a text. College gets very hectic and can sometimes be overwhelming. Jumping to conclusions does not benefit anyone in the relationship. Instead, go into every situation open-minded and grow through what you go through.

Let’s face it, we are in a world where “hook up” culture is real.  There are many benefits to having a long-distance relationship in college and beyond.  Some benefits include becoming more independent, becoming great at planning, and having a relationship that is more than just physical.  Long-distance relationships in college can be a positive experience for both partners. Implementing the tips above is a step in the right direction that will help to further strengthen your connection when miles apart.
